Rojales Spain
68Rojales Spain is situated in between the two airports of Murcia and Alicante. It is situated inland from the coastal resort of Guardamar del Segura in the district of Alicante. Rojales is a beautiful town which sits on the Segura River. The Segura River plays a really important part in the areas history and modern day irrigation. Some of the more famous areas in the town are the cave houses at Cuevas del Rodeo. These cave houses have been carved into the side of a sandstone mountain during the 19th century. Live music shows are regularly held here as our craft markets. The cave dwellings are now mostly used by craftsmen and artists. The population of Rojales Spain is just over 9000, although during the tourist season the population can shoot up to over 30,000.
There have been excavations which have resulted in relics dating back to the Bronze Age and the Neolithic era all along the river Segura and Rojales Spain.
Rojales Spain
The town was founded by the Moors between the 8th and 13th centuries. It was the Moors that were responsible for the irrigation system which feeds the land with much-needed water from the Segura River. Water plays a huge part in the history of Rojales Spain. For instance there is a massive waterwheel which was built towards the end of the 19th century. This is protected from damage during the flood season by some well constructed stonework. Another feature of the town which is also connected with the Segura River is the Azud which is a stone dam that was built during by the 16th century and is still in full working order. This was built in order to raise the water level so that the fields could be irrigated. Another major feature is the Carlos III bridge with its three wide arches. This 18th century bridge spanning the river Segura is another example of the finest of Spanish stonework.
As previously mentioned, Rojales Alicante has some fine examples of cave houses. These cave houses are not the primitive homes that some people may imagine them to be, in fact some of them have been modernized to very high standards. These cave houses have been carved into sandstone taking as far back as the Moorish invasions. You can take a tour of the cave houses at Rojales Spain where you can stop for a snack in the Café and picnic area. You should also visit the Shell House. This is a testament to the perseverance of the artist Manuel Fulleda Alcarez. His house, which is decorated with tile, shells, and mirrors, can be located near the cave houses.
For those who like a fiesta or festival, there is the most important festival which is on 29 June. This festival is in honor of San Pedro (Saint Peter). There are also festivals during April and October. For those who like golf there are several fantastic golf courses in the area of Rojales Spain. And as is common throughout the region, you will find the Spanish natives of Rojales Spain to be charming and very friendly. Property in Rojales Spain is still relatively cheap.

Isobel, your hub brings back some fond memories. The caves you mention are indeed very interesting, and the last time we went one had an artist at work inside it. "You should also visit the Shell House." We have been inside the shell house. It was amazing. At the time (a few years ago now), it was up for sale. I wonder if it did ever get sold?
