Rojales
53Rojales is a useful Spanish town situated on the Costa Blanca. The Costa Blanca refers to a stretch of coastline in the province of Alicante, Spain. The Costa Blanca means the white coast and is well over 200 km long. The name was coined in 1957 by an airline company that was offering flights from London to Valencia. One of its principal industries is tourism and is popular with German and British tourists. Rojales is situated inland from the seaside town of Guardamar del Segura which is very popular and has beautiful sandy beaches. Another popular tourist destination to the south of Rojales is the town of Torrevieja. This is very popular with English tourists who flock there for most of the year, but especially during the tourist season.
Although Rojales is a small Spanish town, where the population reaching no more than 16,000 during the peak season when most residents are there, there is a large expatriate community which is resident here.

You can reach Rojales from two airports. In the north is Alicante Airport and in the south is Murcia Airport. Rojales is nearer to Murcia, about 30 minutes drive, although Alicante is only 35 minutes to the other is not much difference between the two.

Rojales is situated on the River Segura on which it has relied on for irrigation for centuries. It was originally the Moors that constructed the irrigation system which has served Rojales agriculture even up until the present day. In fact a lot of the historical artifacts that have been discovered and preserved are associated with the River.
Some of the other more important sites around the town are the cave houses and the famous shell house. The cave houses have been excavated from the sandstone hills and are mainly used by artists and craftsmen. There are craft markets held here throughout the year where you can buy some of the local products. The shell house is the vision of one of the local artistes who has painstakingly put together a house whose façade is covered with local seashells, shards of mirror and glass, pieces of tile, and is a beautiful addition to the area. It is located near to the cave houses.
From Rojales you can also visit the beautiful city of Elche. Elche has a population of around 230,000 people and is ranked third largest in the transient community, 20th largest city in Spain. One of the main tourist haunts here is the absolutely fabulous Elche palm grove. Known in Spanish as Palmeral de Elche, the palm grove is an orchard that contains well over 200,000 palm trees. This site was declared a world heritage site in the year 2000.
Also to the west of Rojales is the Spanish town of Orihuela. The city of Orihuela has a population which was approaching 33,000 at the end of 2005. The Segura River also flows through the city, and as with the surrounding areas, the agriculture is based around oranges, lemons, olives, palm trees, pomegranates, and almonds. It is also said that Orihuela is culturally closer to the region of Murcia than Valencia.
If you are visiting Rojales as tourist or you are intending to relocate to Spain and base yourself in this area, you could not choose a better spot. If you have come here to integrate with the Spanish and marry some of their customs to your own life, then Rojales is the place for you. Rojales retains some of the beautiful charm which is offered by the Spanish people and culture. Rojales also offers a vibrant community of immigrants from English and German speaking countries.
