What is a face lift? The technical term is rhytidectomy. It is a fairly common plastic surgery technique and is used to try and restore some of the youthful of appearance in the face. The face lift will pull back sagging skin. The face lift will also reduce or even eliminate crow’s feet and wrinkles. There are several similar techniques to this including blepharoplasty, commonly known as eye surgery, rhinoplasty, commonly known as a "nose job". Although these treatments are not part of the face lift, they can be carried out at the same time. This all depends on how much work you want to have done when you go into your face lift. Indeed there are many alternatives to the face lift if you do not want to go through full cosmetic surgery, as some people only want minor work.

It is always very important that you visit your family doctor before you go to a plastic surgeon for a facelift. This is just to have an informal chat about what you intend to do and she may be able to fill you in on some of the positives and negatives about face lift surgery.

The face lift consultation

Once you have been to your doctor and you have decided on which plastic surgeon you are going to visit, then comes the consultation. You must always visit with a certified physician attached to a reputable surgery. The plastic surgeon that will perform your face-lift surgery will be able to explain to you how long you will be away from work; they will also discuss the costs of the face lift and may be able to offer you financial options.

Types of face lift

There are many different types of face-lift that can be performed. The basic face lift procedure involves making an incision in front and behind the ear and another underneath the hair line. The second incision will be made beneath the chin. The skin is separated from the underlying tissue with the muscle and tissue being repositioned and tightened. The skin is pulled upwards with all the excess trimmed, the incisions are then sealed. Most of the scar line is hidden underneath the hair with only a small scar visible underneath the chin.

The mini face lift

This is as good a of is a procedure that is less invasive because it only works on a smaller area the face. It's also known as the "weekend face lift" this is because the patients only need to take a weekend for the procedure and can return to work on the Monday. It tightens up the loose skin around the neck and can improve the appearance of the jowls.

The S-lift

This kind of face lift works on the bottom part of the face using an S-shape incision, hence the name. It comprises lifting up the muscle tissue so that cheeks are pulled back.

The mid-face lift

This face lift procedure lifts up the fat pads in the cheeks over the cheekbones so that it tightens the sagging skin in that area. This procedure is often carried out with an endoscope, a miniature camera.

The tissue-glue face lift

This is basically a face lift where instead of the surgeon using stitches to close the wound he may apply surgical glue. This supposedly decreases the time needed for recovery. The glue is eventually eliminated from the body naturally.
