Bowel constipation is common in people regardless of age.  As the immune system grows weaker as people grow older, the elderly become more vulnerable to this symptom. Studies show that approximately 26% of men and 34% of women over 65 years of age fall victim to this symptom. Constipation remedies are plenty but should be chosen wisely. A consultation with the doctor is the best choice when dealing with constipation in the elderly. Many people have to go to other extremes to try and eliminate constipation such as taking colon cleansing drugs like Bowtrol. Others find that mild body cleansers work not only in the short term but into the long-term for curing the symptoms of constipation.

Symptoms of rare bowel movement

The term constipation often refers to a symptom which involves rare bowel movement, having difficulty passing stools or experiencing a feeling of not having completed the process of discharging the wastes from the body. Although often temporary and harmless, at times it is a sign of more serious health problems such as mass lesions or hypothyroidism. In most cases, constipation is a result of a poor diet but it is also common t.o find people who get constipated as a result of taking certain medicines. With the diminished immune system in the elderly, it is important to make sure which factor caused the constipation.

Serious medical condition?

Various hospital examinations can be taken in order to make sure that the constipation is not a symptom of a more serious medical condition.  A physical examination of the individual’s body can show whether there are any irregular masses in the body which resulted in the symptom. An examination of the colon can also reveal what is causing the constipation. Although popular, the lengthened use and dependence of laxatives is not recommended. Some possible solutions include setting a schedule for bathroom breaks, increasing the amount of fluids and fiber in the diet and to exercise as much as possible.  Individuals who experience the chronic form of constipation may consult the doctor whether it will be wise to consume stool softeners or some form of laxative.

Although not commonly discussed in public, constipation can be found throughout history. Even Hippocrates acknowledged that certain groups are at greater risk of such symptoms. He once stated that “the intestines tend to become sluggish with age.” The percentage increases dramatically with age, as only 2% of those under 65 experience constipation.

A change in diet and lifestyle is all the more important as people grow older. It is a simple way of preventing or at least reducing the risk of experiencing bowel constipation. People will avoid having to go to the doctor for such complaints. Some studies show that 2.5 million visits to the doctor are constipation related, amounting to at least $400 million each year for use of laxatives.
